Change Your Google Business Phone Number

Updating the phone number on a Business Profile is a two minute edit that Google then has to review. It usually publishes in minutes, but it can sit pending for up to 30 days, get rejected, or quietly revert. This page shows the correct steps and how to read each status.

SHORT ANSWER

Edit profile, then Contact, change the number, Save. Google reviews it before it shows: usually minutes, up to 30 days. Use your real number, keep it verified, keep it consistent.

01 · THE EDIT

How To Change The Number

Four steps, done from the Google Account that manages the profile. The edit itself takes two minutes; the review is Google's.

  1. 01

Sign In To The Right Account

Open Google Search or Maps signed in with the Google Account that manages the profile. Google says you must use the linked account to edit business info; a personal account that only left a review cannot edit the number.

  2. 02

    Open Edit Profile, Then Contact

Find your business, select Edit profile, then the Contact section. This is where the primary number and up to two additional numbers live. Mobile or landline are fine; fax is not accepted.

  3. 03

    Replace The Number And Save

Enter the correct number and select Save. Google reviews the change before it goes live. Expert tip: change one field at a time so a rejection on another field does not hold up the number.

  4. 04

    Wait For The Review

Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes, sometimes up to 30 days. The change shows as pending until reviewed. Do not resubmit the same edit repeatedly; that can restart the clock.

STATUS DECODER · AFTER YOU SAVE

What is your edit doing right now?

Pick what you see on the profile. The panel explains what Google means by it and the correct next move. This reads Google's documented statuses; it does not connect to your account.

02 · WHY IT STALLS

Why The Number Will Not Update

When a change does not publish, it is almost always one of these six. Each has a different fix, so name the cause before you touch the profile again.

01

Still Under Review

Pending is the normal state right after an edit. Number changes can sit longer because Google takes extra steps to confirm a number before it publishes.

FIXWait out the review window before treating it as a fault.
02

Number Looks Inconsistent

If the new number does not match your website, invoices and directory listings, Google is slower to trust it and more likely to hold or reject it.

FIXMake the number consistent everywhere first, then edit.
03

Call Tracking Or Shared Line

A forwarding, tracking or shared number as the primary can look like a mismatch and trigger a rejection under Google's guidelines.

FIXKeep your real number primary; add a tracking number as secondary.
04

Profile Not Verified

On an unverified profile some edits do not stick. Google says you can edit a few fields, but full, stable editing needs a verified profile.

FIXVerify the profile, then change the number.
05

Overwritten By A Google Update

Google can update your profile from sources it trusts. Your edit can appear to revert when that happens, with an alert in Edit profile.

FIXCheck for a Google update alert and re-save the correct number.
06

Wrong Account Or No Access

Editing from an account that does not manage the profile silently fails. The number never changes because the edit was never authorised.

FIXConfirm you manage the profile before editing.

03 · THE RULE BEHIND IT

Consistency Decides Trust

Google reviews a number change to confirm it is accurate. The single biggest thing you control is whether the number agrees with everything else Google can see: your website, your invoices, your other directory listings and your older reviews. A number that matches everywhere publishes quickly. A number that appears only on the profile is the one that sits pending or gets rejected.

One mismatch is enough to slow a review.

04 · IF IT IS STILL STUCK

Escalate The Change To Google

If the edit is genuinely stuck well beyond the 30 day window, take it to support with the facts, not another resubmission.

AConfirm it is not a Google update

Open Edit profile and check for a Google update alert. If one is there, accept the correct number instead of filing a case.

BCheck the edit status

Use Google's Check your edit status tool to see whether the change is pending, not approved, or accepted.

CAppeal a rejection

If it was not approved, use Google's appeal for rejected business information edits rather than re-saving the same number.

DOpen a support case

Go to Business Profile Help, describe the change, the date, and that it will not publish. Include the profile name and the correct number.

QUESTIONS

Phone Number Update Questions

How do I change my phone number on Google Business Profile?+

Sign in to the Google Account that manages the profile, open your Business Profile on Google Search or Maps, select Edit profile, then Contact, update the phone number and select Save. Google reviews the change before it appears.

How long does a phone number update take to show?+

Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes up to 30 days. If your change still shows as pending after that window, it is worth checking your edit status and, if needed, contacting support.

Why is my new phone number stuck on pending?+

Pending means the edit is still under review. Google reviews changes to confirm accuracy, and number changes can take longer because Google takes extra steps to protect profile integrity. Do not resubmit repeatedly; that can reset the review.

Why was my phone number change not approved?+

Google may not approve a change if it cannot confirm the number is accurate, if the number is a fax line, or if it looks like a call-tracking or shared number that breaks the guidelines. You may be able to appeal a rejected edit.

Can I change my phone number before the profile is verified?+

Google says you can edit some fields, including the phone number, on an unverified profile, but to edit everything and to keep changes stable you should verify the profile first. On an unverified profile a number change may not stick.

Can I use a mobile number instead of a landline?+

Yes. Google accepts mobile or landline numbers as the primary number. It does not accept fax numbers. You can add up to two more phone numbers in addition to the primary one.

Why did my old number come back after I changed it?+

That usually means Google updated the profile from another source it trusts, or the edit was not approved. Check the Edit profile section for a Google update alert, confirm the new number matches your website and listings, then re-save.

Can I add more than one phone number?+

Yes. In addition to the primary business number you can add up to two more numbers. They must be mobile or landline, not fax. The primary number is the one shown most prominently to customers.

How do I hide my phone number on my profile?+

Open your Business Profile, select More, Business Profile settings, Advanced settings, then under Phone number turn on Don't show. The number stays on the profile for Google but is hidden from the public listing.

Should I use a call tracking number on my profile?+

Use it with care. Google wants the primary number to be your real business number that rings directly. A forwarding or tracking number is safer as an additional number, with your true business number kept as the primary, to avoid a mismatch that can trigger a rejection.

My number is correct in the dashboard but wrong on Google. Why?+

That is usually a Google update from another source or a pending review. Compare the dashboard number with an incognito search. If they differ, look for a Google update alert in Edit profile and confirm your number is consistent across your website and directories.

Who do I contact if the number will not update?+

If the edit is still stuck well beyond 30 days, open a case through Google Business Profile Help at support.google.com/business/gethelp, describe the change, when you made it, and that it is not publishing, and include your profile details.
